The Disinformation Governance Board is an Attack on the Freedom of Speech in America
By Alexander Muse ·

President Biden’s decision to create the Orwellian “Disinformation Governance Board” is the first official step in the reformation of the freedom of speech in America. The new mantra of the left is that free speech threatens democracy.1 Over the past decade, the federal government has relied more and more on private actors to monitor, censor, and control the American people. For example, during the pandemic, the CDC paid Saudi-backed SafeGraph to track millions of phones to determine which Americans were violating Covid-19 lockdown orders.2 Congress has pressured Twitter, Facebook, and Google to step up their suppression of speech on their platforms threatening to ‘crackdown’ on the big tech companies if they don’t.3 The FBI has even been able to secretly monitor the communications and movement of journalists working on negative stories about the president and his family by issuing secret orders to Microsoft, AT&T, and Uber - unlimited monitoring that lasted more than a year without having to notify their targets.4 Constitutional rights are clearly under attack in America.
It was no coincidence that just two days after Twitter announced the sale to Elon Musk5, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas sought to reassure critics of the deal by announcing the formation of a "Disinformation Governance Board" to combat misinformation ahead of the 2022 midterms.6
Twitter had played a decisive role in the 2020 presidential election when it decided to suppress ‘disinformation’ that purported to show that Biden’s son made millions selling his father’s influence in China, Russia, and Ukraine.7 Just as early voting began Twitter suspended the oldest newspaper in the United States as well as prominent users who were discussing the influence-peddling story, and even blocked the IP addresses of websites that featured the shocking story.8
After early voting had ended Twitter restored the New York Post’s account and began allowing users to share the story they had falsely labeled ‘disinformation’. The company’s CEO eventually apologized and the story was corroborated by the Department of Justice, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.9 Of course this was only after polling showed that 1 in 6 Biden voters would have changed their vote had the story not been censored.10
Elon Musk’s vow to end censorship on Twitter was widely so criticized in the media Secretary Mayorkas was sent to congress to make it clear that the administration would step in to fight disinformation. Nina Jankowicz who had previously called for the creation of a disinformation directorate inside of the National Security Council was named the head of what Mayorkas dubbed the “Disinformation Governance Board” but instead of inside of the NSC the directorate was created inside the Department of Homeland Security.
Nina Jankowicz’s appointment as the ‘Minister of Truth’ seems to be very much related to the fact that she cheered Twitter’s decision to censor derogatory information about then-candidate Biden - a decision that changed the outcome of the presidential election. The fact that she vouched for the veracity of the debunked and discredited Steele Dossier likely gave the administration comfort that she would continue to view information derogatory to the government as disinformation.11
